Planning a big city trip with kids can be a challenge. You need a destination that’s safe, easy to navigate, and packed with fun activities for all ages. Luckily, Copenhagen checks all the boxes!

The Danish capital is famous for its charm, bike-friendly streets, great public transportation, amazing food and a strong focus on sustainability, making it an ideal city for families. Whether you’re looking for world-class attractions, child-friendly museums, or just a relaxed, stress-free travel experience, Copenhagen has something for everyone.

In this post, I’ll share five reasons why Copenhagen, which is also Easygoing’s home city, is one of the best cities in Europe - if not the world - to visit with kids. Plus I've add a few tips on making the most of your Copenhagen trip!

1. Safe & easy to explore

Copenhagen is one of the safest cities in the world, making it an ideal destination for families with young children. The city is compact and easy to navigate, whether you’re walking, biking, or using public transport. The metro, busses and trains are clean, reliable, and stroller-friendly, and most attractions are within short distances of each other. With its pedestrian-friendly streets and relaxed pace, parents can feel at ease while exploring with kids in tow.

2. Tivoli Gardens – a fairytale amusement park

No family trip to Copenhagen is complete without a visit to Tivoli Gardens, one of the world’s oldest amusement parks. Located in the heart of the city, Tivoli offers a magical mix of thrilling rides, enchanting gardens, and live entertainment. The park’s charming atmosphere inspired Walt Disney himself, and it’s easy to see why. Whether your kids love roller coasters, carousels, or simply wandering through beautifully lit pathways, Tivoli is a must-visit.

3. Kid-friendly museums & attractions

Copenhagen is home to some of the most engaging and interactive museums for children. A few highlights include:

  • The Experimentarium – A hands-on science museum where kids can explore physics, technology, and the wonders of the human body through interactive exhibits.

  • The National Museum’s Children’s Wing – A dedicated space where kids can dress up as Vikings, explore historical toys, and learn about Danish culture in a fun way.

  • The Blue Planet Aquarium – Northern Europe’s largest aquarium, where kids can marvel at sharks, sea turtles, and exotic fish in massive underwater tunnels.

4. Family-oriented lifestyle

Copenhagen is a pioneer in sustainability, and its family-friendly infrastructure makes traveling with kids incredibly convenient. The city is full of well-maintained parks and playgrounds, offering plenty of green spaces to take a break and let the little ones run around. Renting a cargo bike is a popular way for families to explore - just load up your kids and cruise through the city like a local! Plus, with plenty of organic food options and eco-conscious restaurants, you can feel good about your choices while dining out.

5. Beaches & outdoor fun

While Copenhagen is known for its urban charm, it also boasts plenty of outdoor activities for families. Some great spots include:

  • Amager Beach Park – A sandy beach perfect for playing in the summer months. And very close to the center of the city.

  • Copenhagen Zoo – One of Europe’s oldest zoos, home to elephants, pandas, and a fantastic children's area. I take my daughter there all the time.

  • Reffen – Copenhagen streetfood area on the half-island of Refshaleøen, which is worth a visit in itself. Tip: Take the harbour buses out there. Same price as normal public transportation.

  • Playgrounds - The popular site “Børn i Byen” (kids in the city) has made this list of 10 great playgrounds in Copenhagen. It’s in Danish, but nothing a quick Google Translate can’t handle.

Final tips for visiting copenhagen with kids

  • Invest in a Copenhagen Card – The Copenhagen Card provides free public transport and entry to many attractions, saving you both time and money.

  • Take Advantage of Family Discounts – Many museums and attractions offer free or reduced admission for kids.

  • Pack for the Weather – Copenhagen’s weather can be unpredictable, so bring layers and rain gear just in case.

  • Easygoing - Of course we have to mention that we are in Copenhagen, why you don’t have to bring your own stroller and other kids gear. See our selection in Copenhagen.
